Teens 13 to 18 · Tweed Heads South

There is a reason most teens quit sport by 15. It is not laziness.

It is being talked down to, or thrown in with adults. So we built a room for them: their own peer group, mature framing, and real expectations they can actually rise to.

$99 for the most structured first month of real training your teen will actually stick with.

  • Seven in-dojo sessions over three weeks, taught by a 4th Dan. Their own peer group, not a kids class aged up.
  • Online support between sessions, so the practice at home is not guesswork.
  • A Week 4 readiness check. We tell you straight whether it is working.
  • No lock-in. No contract. Sparring stays optional, supervised, gear on.

Confidence does not come from being told they are great. It comes from doing a hard thing, badly, and choosing to come back. We make the room safe enough that they keep showing up.

Or watch them quit another sport by week three because nobody learned their name.

"Sensei Sam, Luke and the team are amazing. Patient and consistent. I have been going with my daughter for a couple of years now in Tweed Heads. It has been awesome to build strength, confidence and coordination and watch my daughter and her friends do the same. A great little community."

"Sensei Sam runs such a great karate dojo. We go as a family, and not only do we learn necessary skills, we also love the Japanese style tradition in the training. Highly recommend Yushukan Karate."

"This training has been so fun. My sons are motivated and I have learnt heaps. Great to have hands-on experience with small groups and knowledgeable senseis. Wish we had started sooner."

The two questions parents ask

Direct answers, not slogans.

Is 13 too late to start karate?

Thirteen is a strong age to start, not a late one. Teenagers learn quickly when they understand why they are being asked to do something, and are treated as capable of owning their training. The problem most teens hit is not age. It is being put into a kids program with the age raised, or thrown cold into an adult class that is not designed for their developing body.

What about contact and sparring?

Sparring at Yushukan is optional, controlled and supervised, and grade-appropriate in intensity. We do not run hard sparring with new teens. Protective gear is required. The point is real learning, not toughness performance. If your teen wants to compete in a knockdown or MMA setting, we will say so honestly and point you to the right gym.
